It's "in the pipeline", so something comes down the pipe!

Pike, it's short for turnpike, as in road. See also here, here.

"Down the pipe" means to me more that something's going down the drain, instead of just coming up in time/space.

both are correct. a "pike" is a highway, which is where words like "turnpike" come from. you'll get pushback either way if you use it in a news post. :)
